New York Association of Black Journalists (NYABJ)

Founded in 1976, the New York Association of Black Journalists (NYABJ) has provided professional and moral support to Black media professionals in the Greater New York City area. Their more than 300 paid members, and hundreds more who regularly attend their events, work across the media landscape from reporters and producers to photographers and graphic designers, as well as public relations professionals, academics and students.

Building A Resonant Podcast for An Award-Winning Chapter of the Largest Non-Profit Organization for Journalists of Color in the United States

Opportunity

When chapter president, Bonita Sostre, expressed an interest in the development of a chapter podcast, I volunteered to lend my expertise as a former podcast producer at New York Public Radio (the largest public radio organization in the United States) and WNYC (one of the most listened-to public radio stations in the country, reaching over one million listeners each week), to shape, launch, and lead the development of a member-run podcast. With the help of two reporter-producers, ‘The Sidebar by NYABJ’ was born!

Creative Execution & Strategy

  • Brainstorming and deciding on a show theme, in service of NYABJ’s Black media professional audience

  • Ownership of visual and show identity including copywriting, design of logo and assets for social media and digital promotion

  • Led project management and facilitation of regular meeting with a nimble but enthusiastic remote team

  • Adherence to a consistent biweekly publishing schedule

  • Independently produced two show episodes

Results & Impact

  • As of November 2024, 59 episodes have been produced by more than 20 contributors, expanding the reach of the NYABJ brand and providing thought leadership opportunities for chapter members
